LOWER SCHOOL

THE PROVIDENCE DIFFERENCE | JOY IN LEARNING

Welcome to Providence Lower School, a Christian elementary school in Santa Barbara. In our K-6 division, we strive for academic excellence and an inspiring school environment.

GROWING AS LIFELONG LEARNERS

Lower School students learn the basics—reading, writing, and math—but also are introduced to literature, history, science, art, music, and the Bible in an academic and social environment that prepares them to become lifelong learners.

Everything is new for the elementary student, from the wonder of reading their first word to the satisfaction of completing a long division problem. Providence teachers strive to come alongside each student, nurturing abilities, strengthening weaknesses, and guiding in knowledge and truth. Our teachers are our school’s greatest strength. They carefully tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of each class.

Enthusiastic teachers guide students step-by-step in acquiring academic skills, encouraging them to think critically, to develop a sense of personal responsibility, and to grow in their love for learning.

The core academic program focuses on phonics-based reading, composition, grammar, spelling, language-based mathematics, science, Bible, and history.

ENRICHMENT

Enrichment classes enhance the core curriculum with Spanish, art, music, and physical education.

A worship band provides opportunities for students to learn to play an instrument, sing in front of a group, and lead inspiring worship at weekly chapels.

Students in Grades 4–6 have opportunities to participate in organized athletics.

Lower School students regularly use a library designed for their needs.

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

A foundational belief at Providence is that we were created by a God who loves us for a deep and meaningful purpose. Our goal in Bible classes is for each student to develop an understanding of God’s love and in turn to live a life of meaning and purpose. Lower School Bible classes follow a scope and sequence that introduces students to the Bible in an age-appropriate manner and outlines God’s great love for his people.

The weekly chapel program gives students the opportunity to lead and participate in corporate worship and to hear from pastors and teachers in our community. The chapel experience emphasizes the importance of the heart as well as the mind in following Christ. It is one of the most beloved Lower School traditions.

At Providence, we believe that faith is not limited to chapel services and Bible classes but it permeates all things. Christian teachers incorporate Biblical teaching into all areas of study while emphasizing those beliefs in common to all believers. While we teach from a Christian worldview, Providence is open and welcoming to students regardless of their religious affiliation. The school is comprised of families who desire a common set of character traits to be developed in their children:  love, integrity, humility, care for others, and a passion for making the world a better place.

SERVICE LEARNING

We believe that academics and character go hand in hand and education becomes useful when it is put to use for a greater purpose. To that end, our classroom time is combined with opportunities to serve our community. We strive to prepare our students to meet their future academic, professional, and spiritual challenges with knowledge, grace, and good character.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Providence Lower School students have numerous opportunities to go beyond the classroom and to learn in the field. From kindergarten trips to the pumpkin patch, to sixth graders visiting Catalina Island to study marine biology, field trips are significant times for learning and for growing together as a community.

TEACHERS & CLASS SIZE

Our small class sizes and credentialed teachers ensure that each classroom meets the highest possible standards. Lead and assistant teachers are experienced and qualified. They live Christ-centered lives and are passionate about serving children and families. Classes are small, with an approximate 9:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Parent involvement as a classroom volunteer is welcome and encouraged, but not required. Parents are automatically members of the San Roque campus Parent Association, which meets monthly to share information and plan activities to enhance the life of the school community.
